Hamburgs are a very old breed of heritage chicken with their first mention dating back to the 14th century. There are 6 recognized varieties with only a handful of breeders working with a mere 2 varieties of them, the Black and the Silver Spangled. One variety, the White, is essentially extinct with the Silver Pencilled, Golden Pencilled, and Gold Spangled barely hanging on.
The Hamburg is a chatty, active breed laying medium white eggs. They’re excellent layers that are very unlikely to go broody. They grow quickly and hold their own with bigger breeds.
